Research & Development Tax Relief

Research & Development Relief for Corporation Tax

The Average UK SME R&D claim is worth £57,724 so don’t miss out on the chance for a valuable cash injection for your business!

Introduced by the UK Government in 2000, the R&D tax relief scheme is designed to encourage innovation and global competitiveness by allowing companies to reclaim some of the money invested in qualifying research & development.

This UK tax incentive is designed to encourage companies to invest in R&D. Companies can reduce their tax bill or claim payable cash credits as a proportion of their R&D expenditure. It can even be claimed on an unsuccessful project.

The project must relate to your company’s trade - either an existing one, or one that you intend to start up based on the results of the R&D.

To qualify for R&D  relief you would need to explain how a project:

  • Looked for an advance in science and technology

  • Had to overcome uncertainty

  • Tried to overcome this uncertainty

  • Could not be easily worked out by a professional in the field

Your project may research or develop a new process, product or service or improve on an existing one.

How much could you claim?

How difficult is it to claim?

Many businesses don’t really know what projects and expenditure types are eligible, which means they often miss claimable expenses. We also often see mistakes in claims. The most common mistakes we see are:

  • Claims that are missing expenditure that could rightfully be claimed

  • Claims that include costs that aren’t qualifying, which could mean risking an HMRC enquiry.

We know exactly what HMRC requires. By working with HMRC on complex claims and staying up to date with HMRC policy, we understand the information it needs and, more importantly, why. With our support, you can be sure to share exactly the right details to satisfy HMRC’s requirements.

Abell Morliss has over the past 5 years saved millions of pounds for its clients, we’ve developed a flexible R & D tax credit claim process to help minimise your stress and maximise your claim!
